CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Hazel!”

Somebody was calling to her from far away. It felt like she was sitting on the bottom of a pond, her ankles cemented in mud, the voice calling to her from above. She kicked until she was free and crawled to the surface.

Her mother and Tyler leaned over her. Tyler wore an expression of naked terror that she’d never seen on him before. She didn’t like it. “Are you okay?” he asked.

“What happened?” she asked. It felt like somebody was trying to push her head back under water.

“Don’t move.”

“What are you talking about? I’m fine.”

He looked at her, dumbfounded. “You’re not fine. There’s an ambulance on the way.”

“Oh god,” she said, trying to sit up. “That’s not necessary. Where did they go?”

“Where did who go?”

“The Odd Lot. They were right here.”

“Hazel, you’ve been unconscious for fifteen minutes,” said her mother. “You need to sit still until help arrives.”

“I can’t sit still!” Hazel snapped. “Whoever killed Boden is still out there and they’re messing with me. I don’t know why and I don’t know how, but they’re coming for me.” She rubbed her throbbing temples. “I need to find them.”

“Hazel . . .” began Tyler. He put his hand on her shoulder, trying to keep her from getting up. She flared her nostrils.

“Tyler Cortez, get your hands off me this instant.” She reached up and grabbed his hand. The result was instant—her magical power surged and jetted from her hands. Tyler was lifted off his feet and thrown back into the tall grass a few yards away.

“Tyler!” she yelped.

She dragged herself to her feet and lurched toward him, but he was already pulling himself out of the grass, seemingly no worse for having been catapulted away from her midconversation. He reached out for her, but she recoiled. The magic in her hands refused to dissipate and it arced between her fingertips like pink electricity in a Tesla coil.

“Stay back,” she warned.

The ambulance finally arrived at that moment, coming down the North Track toward the orchard.

“Tell them it was for you,” she said in a panic.

“It might be a tough sell considering we gave them your info . . .”

“What do I do?”

“Just make that stop,” he said, gesturing at her hands.

“I can’t!” She shook her hands like she was trying to cast off a bit of spiderweb. At last the power faded, if only a little. It would have to do. She balled her fists up and jammed them down at her sides as the EMTs climbed out of the ambulance.

She kept her hands balled into fists the whole time, hoping that might cage her powers. What was going on? Did it have anything to do with the text she had received?

Ur intro to hexting . . . good luck hiding now.

What had that meant? Hiding what? Her self? Her power? Her secrets? All of the above?

“Everything checks out,” said the EMT. “Heart rate, blood pressure, vitals. Everything seems normal.”

“So I’m good to go now?” she asked.

“We’d encourage you to
